The bandit who was nabbed by Berbice police minutes after he had committed a robbery on a Tain, Corentyne businesswoman was positively identified as the perpetrator.
He has since been charged and remanded to prison.
Chrisendat Ganga, called ‘Dapa’, 21, and a deportee of 58 Bond Yard Port Mourant appeared before Magistrate Krisendat Persaud at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court yesterday, charged with robbery.
Also present was the victim Samila Bedeshak, 55, of 64 Tain Settlement, Corentyne.
Ganga was refused bail and was remanded to prison. His matter has also been transferred to the Whim magistrate court for March 14.
The prosecution case was that on March 4, the woman who operates a grocery in the village was on her way home after completing business for the day when she was attacked by a masked man who cuffed her and attempted to take away her bag and other belongings.
The woman held on to her belongings and a scuffle ensued. The bandit beat her.
He eventually managed to take away her bag which contained $US150; $60,000 and more than $45,000 worth of GT&T and Digicel phone cards, and a Nokia cell phone among other items.
During the scuffle the kerchief which the bandit was wearing came off and the woman was able to recognize the thief as the known character from the area.
A report was made and police moved swiftly, entered the bandit’s place of abode. He was arrested and a search of the premises unearthed $45,000, a Nokia Cell phone and a quantity of Phone cards all reportedly stolen from the woman.
The bandit had reportedly told investigators that the things were brought by somebody else who was living there. However investigators did not believe his story. He was later positively identified as the bandit.
Chrisendat Ganga and his brother Ramnarine Ganga both deportees have been implicated in a number of crimes in various parts of Guyana, including the daring day time robbery at the Laparkhan Building in Rose Hall Town.
Ramnarine is reportedly in jail for possession of arms and ammunition.
