Man remanded for lover’s death

“I did not kill Susie my worship” said Kevin Berlin who is accused of killing his 20-year-old lover Farida Ramdeen, called Susie, sometime between March 4 and March 6, 2011 at Houston, East Bank Demerara.
The unrepresented Berlin was not required to plead during his case hearing which was conducted at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before acting chief Magistrate Priya Beharry.
Prosecutor Police Inspector, Stephen Telford told the court that on March 4, last, the accused and Ramdeen departed their Vreed-en-Hoop Squatting Area home around 20:00 hours to visit an aunt in Alberttown, Georgetown. The couple was in a car heading to their destination when the accused demanded that the driver stop at Houston Bridge, East Bank Demerara, and ordered his lover out. It was sometime between that period and the following day he allegedly murdered the woman and dumped her body in Houston Estate Backdam canal.
The accused, the court was told, later confessed to killing his girlfriend prior to him taking investigators to where the body was dumped.
He was subsequently placed into police custody.
Magistrate Beharry then informed the accused that he will be remanded. She ordered that the prosecution complete their investigation within the next three weeks, before fixing the next hearing for April 15.
Reports revealed that the couple had recently been living at Middle Road, La Penitence. The accused hails from Pouderoyen on the West Bank of Demerara.
According to a relative of the now dead woman, Ramdeen suffered years of abuse at the hands of her alleged killer.
Indira Ramdeen, an aunt of the deceased, said that her niece was in an oppressive relationship with a young man, and when relatives found out and confronted her, she normally denied.
According to relatives, who were summoned to identify her body, Ramdeen’s body had marks of violence. Her face was black and blue and her left hand had a stab wound.
“She is a left-hander and she had to be blocking the juks (stabs) that he was firing. He tell the police is three times he duck she in the water and drown she.
He then push she underneath some stuff in the water…He is a drug addict and he does work as a garbage collector. He tell them he de drunk and he smoke up,” a relative said.
An autopsy conducted on the woman remains found that she died from asphyxiation, compression to the neck and submersion.
