First title in almost 20 years; to get 5-year kit deal from TLC Shipping
Amelia’s Ward United were crowned Senior Champions of the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) when that entity’s one-round Open Senior League, which involved all ten (10) senior clubs, concluded on Friday March 4.
Owing to the rescheduling of several matches, the UDFA‘s first league in three years finished two weeks behind schedule, but according to the UDFA Vice President Sharma Solomon the league achieved the desired objectives.
Playing games at several Community and School Grounds throughout the Bauxite Mining Region allowed, first for communities to reacquaint themselves with players and clubs, and to re-establish the first and second division status of clubs.
Winning with eighteen (18) points, the Champions Amelia’s Ward United, with newly appointed coach Patrick Dey managed to give the Amelia’s Ward community their first league title in almost two (2) decades which also earned them the top prize of $200,000.
Taking the second spot, a very close one two, were Winners Connections (17 points) who edged out Milerock on a better goal average; they pocketed $100,000 for their efforts with Milerock who will be making their debut in the Caribbean Football Union Club Championships this Sunday, collecting $50,000.
The other three teams rounding out the UDFA Division one table are Bakewell Topp XX, Netrockers, and Silver Shattas, while Vasco, Peacemakers, Blueberry Hill United, and Eagles United will hold second division status for the rest of the season.
The prize giving ceremony is set for tomorrow at the Linden Foundation Secondary School which is home to Amelia’s Ward United FC beginning at 16:30 hours in the School’s Auditorium.
Additionally, the club will be presented with a five-year kit sponsorship compliments of TLC Shipping, a Linden owned Shipping Agent, which operates out of New York.
