– Guyana Teacher’s Union stresses the need for equal education
Today Guyana joins the rest of the world in celebrating International Women’s Day as is designated by the United Nations.
This year will be the 100th year for the celebration and in keeping with the theme the Guyana Teacher’s Union; Women’s Advisory Committee is emphasising the need for equal access to education for all women. This year International Women’s Day is being celebrated under the theme ‘Equal access to education, training and science and technology; pathway to decent work for women”.
On the occasion, Chairperson of the Women’s Advisory Committee Ms. Deborah Shortt-Parker reiterated the point that women are entitled to decent work and so all women and girls must have equal access to education and training.
Ms. Shortt-Parker in her message said particular focus must be placed in the areas of science and technology, as this is the area of science and technology revolution.
“We hold the view that as we continue to define ourselves in our own terms, we must still recognise the many challenges women face and the countless hurdles that we must overcome.”
The call was also made for everyone to join the cause to promote girls in their quest to be involved in training in science and technology.
This, Ms. Shortt-Parker said, will certainly aid in the acquisition of jobs in the future. A call was also made for the Government and all educational institutes to ensure that girls and women everywhere in Guyana are given an equal opportunity to decent work and play as they obtain a good education.
International Women’s Day (IWD) was first declared in 1910 with the first IWD event held in 1911.
