Foo’s X1 take BCB Rohan Kanhai trophy

Jonathon Foo’s X1 captured the Rohan Kanhai trophy and $25,000 prize after beating Royston Crandon’s X1 in the final of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) T20 cricket competition at the Number 69 ground in Upper Corentyne on Sunday.
Watched by a fair size and vocal crowd in overcast conditions, Foo’s X1 got past Anthony Bramble’s X1 by seven wickets in the semifinal which was reduced to 15 overs due to a late start caused by overnight rain and then disposed of Crandon’s X1 by 15 runs in the final which was reduced to 17 overs per side.
The competition was organised by the BCB to launch their 2011 season which should commence this weekend and the intention is to take the Launching matches to the outlying areas in Region 5 and 6 after the inaugural event was held at the Edinburgh ground in East Bank Berbice last year.
Three teams, selected by the BCB selectors, participated in the competition which was played in tribute the Berbice’s greatest cricketer at a venue which was under water two days before the competition.
The runner-up team took home $15,000 while the losing semifinalist collected $10,000 in the competition which was sponsored by MD & Sons Grocery of Port Mourant in Corentyne.
While National Skipper Assad Fudadin did not play due to influenza he his wife and son were among the raucous crowd, while Guyana left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul was given permission to miss the important event at which all the players selected to participate were mandated to be present.
An upset BCB Public Relations Officer Hilbert Foster said that Guyana players Sewnarine Chattergoon, his brother Ramnarine and Esuan Crandon were among the players who failed to show up, adding that action will be taken by the BCB against the players who snubbed the event.
With pulsating music in between deliveries providing additional entertainment and food and Beverages on sale, Bramble’s X1 batted first on a sluggish track and heavy outfield in the semifinal and made 66-9 off their allotted 15 overs with Veerapen Permaul top scoring with 14.
Man-of-the-Match Deoprakash Ramdat took 4-3 while Michael Newland, Yogeshwar Harrinarine and Khemraj Mahadeo had two wickets each.
The 20-year-old Foo, who shot to regional stardom in last year’s Caribbean T20 competition, smashed two fours and two sixes in his 9-ball 20 while National T20 opener Richard Ramdeen made an 11-ball 17 with a four and a six. Krishendat Ramoo took 2-24 from 2.5 overs in a losing cause.
In the final, Foo’s X1, led by a pugnacious 25-ball 34 from Essequibo inter-county player Sherwin Murray and 21 from Moshin Perkhan, made 104-8 off 17 overs before dismissing Crandon’s X1 for 89 in 15.2 overs as Man-of-the-Match Mahadeo captured 3-29.
Foo’s X1 began badly when Ramdeen (3) was bowled by off-spinner Eon Hooper at 8-1 while it was soon 14-2 when the dangerous Foo once again showed his inability to handle the short ball.
Off-spinner Steven Latcha and Hooper opened the bowling on the very slow surface but once Foo arrived, Test pacer Brendon Bess was immediately introduced in the third over.
Foo (1) charged the pacer and missed a wild swipe before the short ball, which has caused his demise several times in his short career, again exposed both his technical and mental weaknesses when he pulled Bess straight to short fine leg, leaving some at the ground hoping that he can show more effort in his cricket development if he wants to sustain his career at a national level.
Murray, an Upper Corentyne player, entertained the crowd which included national selector Hubern Evans, with some lusty hitting and a humongous six over the pavilion at Square leg off Latcha would have cleared most grounds in the world.
Renwick Batson picked up 3-17 for Crandon’s X1 despite an attractive 14-ball 29 from the talented Hooper and 33 from Harrinarine Chattergoon who struggled to get the ball away in his 39-ball innings.
Once Skipper Crandon (3) was run out in a mix-up with Chattergoon, the former Guyana under-15 Skipper was never able to dominate on the large ground and when he and Kevin Ramdeen (0) were removed off successive balls from by Ramdat, Crandon’s X1 lost their way and were bowled out with 10 balls to spare.
