Narsingh Deonarine was named Skipper of the Berbice all-time X1 with Assad Fudadin as his deputy at the Berbice Cricket Board Awards Ceremony at the State House in New Amsterdam on Saturday night.
Former Guyana under-19 Off-spinner and now International Radio cricket commentator Sean Devers, who played senior Inter-County cricket for both Demerara and Berbice made the announcement after being asked to pick an all-time Berbice U-15 team.
Devers, a member of the 1998 Guyana First-Class squad, was assisted in selecting the team by young cricket historian Charwayne Walker.
Devers, who was also asked to select and all-time Berbice under-19 side at last years Awards ceremony, explained that it was much harder to pick an under-15 team since there was not much to judge the players from and added that selecting the pace attack was the most difficult task.
The City resident, who still represents Bermine in Berbice club cricket, commended the BCB for their hard work.
“Keep up the good work….Berbice is by far the best run cricket board in Guyana……AND……AND…..I am not running for any position on the cricket board or campaigning for votes…..so you know when I say this is the best Cricket board in Guyana…. I honestly mean that,” Devers said.
“When I played for Guyana there was no under-15 team so I hope the present under-15 players understand… and value…. the privilege they have in being able to represent their counties and country at such a young age.
Regional under-15 cricket only began in 1996 and it might come as a surprise to many that only two West Indies under-15 teams were ever selected…..in 1996 and 2001,” Devers told the gathering which included former Test player Roger Harper and Basil Butcher.
Devers informed that all five of the West Indies under-15 players from Guyana were from Berbice, saying that Sewnarine Chattergoon, Damodar Dasrat and Gobin Narine were members of the very first West Indies under-15 team.
Hemant Poonu and Assad Fudadin were the other Guyanese to play for the West Indies at under-15 level.
“These five players…… along with Roopnarine Ramgobin…..one of the most talented 14-year-olds I have ever seen bat…….are automatic selections.
This leaves room for just five more players from the many talented Berbicians that have played at this level,” Devers explained.
While leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo has become Guyana’s latest World Cup selectee and left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul continues to torment regional batsmen, the bulk of their success would have come after their under-15 days and were not included.
Only twice has Guyana won Regional under-15 titles. In 1998, when Deonarine led the side and in 1999 when left-arm spinner Suraj Paltu was the Captain. Both times Paltu played important roles and he was picked as the left-arm spinner in the all-time Berbice U-15 team.
Jonathon Foo, who was an outstanding leg-spinner at under-15 level for Berbice was selected as the leg-spinning all-rounder ahead of others like Bishoo and Abdel Fudadin who played for both Berbice and Demerara at U-19 level.
“Hardyal’s 7 wicket haul was the best regional under-15 bowling performance while Kelon Henry, Kaleem Bux, Bess, Toolsie, Punch, Boodoo, Naresh Roopnarine and Keon Joseph were all good pacers at that age.
However, with Fudadin and Dasrat in the team, either one of them could share the new ball with Shevon Marks who just gets the nod over Joseph…. Paltu and Foo will be the main spinners and Ramgobin and Deonarine will provide the off-spin,” Devers explained.
Devers said Left-arm Gudakesh Motie Kanhai, all rounder Eugene LaFluer and off-spinner Steven Latcha were also considered but not selected.
Sewnarine Chattergoon will open the batting with his brother Harrinarine, another Berbician Guyana under-15 skipper. But Devers disclosed that Rolston Tappin and Richard Ramdeen were close contenders to open with Sewnarine Chattergoon.
“The LaFleur brothers, Royston Crandon, Karan Ganesh, Julian Moore and Shawn Perreira are among the many talented Berbicians who did well for this county at under-15 level but while many are called……only eleven could be chosen,” Devers said.
Berbice all time U1-5 team is:
Narsingh Deonarine (Captain), Assad Fudadin (Vice Captain), Sewnarine Chattergoon, Harrinarine Chattergoon, , Roopnarine Ramgobin, Hemant Poonu, Damodar Dasrat, Gobin Narine (wicket keeper), Jonathon Foo, Shevon Marks, Suraj Paltu,
Devers asked the cricketers to continue to play with pride and passion and to love the game, adding that all the fame, fortune and girls will come once they are successful.
Devers told the Berbice Cricket board members to think not what the cricket can do for them but what they can do for the cricket.
“You are not perfect but most would agree that the Berbice Board is doing a very good job and it is hoped that the other Boards could take your lead to make our cricket better,” Devers concluded.
