Three robberies in the capital city have the police working overtime as they try to keep the lid down on a rising crime rate.
The robberies involved three persons at different locations being robbed of their money and valuable possessions as they were either returning to their homes after a regular day’s work or completing business transactions.
The first robbery occurred at midnight on Thursday on D’Urban Street, in the vicinity of the Full Gospel Church, when Roshell Allicock (who resides in the area) was approached by three male “Rastafarians”, who were in a yellow taxi, which drove alongside her as she walked through the street.
Allicock, at that time, had in her possession one Blackberry cellular phone worth $40,000 and one gold chain valued at $150,000 when two of the bandits exited the motor car. One bandit who was armed with a handgun pointed the weapon at her and then relieved her of the above mentioned articles.
The men then rejoined the motor car and made a hasty escape east along D’Urban Street.
And 76-year-old Amanath Muneshwar was the next victim of such an unfortunate experience shortly after he arrived at his Lamaha Street, South Cummingsburg residence, at around 17:15 hrs on Friday.
Kaieteur News understands that Muneshwar was about to remove his bag which was secured in his car trunk when a man who was armed with a handgun approached him and pointed the weapon in his direction.
The bandit then picked up the businessman’s handbag (valued at $5,000), and made good his escape on a blue motor-cycle, heading east along Lamaha Street.
Muneshwar lamented that his handbag not only contained a quantity of cheques for various banks but it also contained a quantity of bills and a book.
The third robbery victim, 59-year-old Janet Bentick, met an unfortunate situation at Campbeville, a mere one and a half hour after Muneshwar was robbed.
Bentick, a nurse by profession, was on her way home after work at 18:45hrs when she was attacked by a man with a cutlass while walking along Joe Singh Road, Campbeville.
This newspaper was told that the man drew a cutlass from his left side pants waist and relieved Bentick of her reading glasses, one Nokia cellular phone and one Samsung cellular phone.
The victim claimed that during the robbery a taxi stopped and the driver exited the car with a firearm and discharged two rounds in the suspect’s direction.
However, the suspect ran south into a clump of bushes and disappeared with the items.
These robberies are only a few that were reported during one particular day of last week in the city of Georgetown. Even though there are several police ranks on the roads during the daytime hours, citizens are of the view that there should be an increase of mobile patrol units at more locations in and surrounding the capital city.
