– Minister Prashad
After much touting by drivers for an increase in the Route 32 minibus fares, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Manniram Prashad said that there will be no increase in fares for the Route.
This was disclosed on Wednesday last at a press briefing at the Ministry’s South Road office, which was attended by the Chairman of the Route 32 Minibus Association, Mr. James Cowsil and other Executive Members of the association.
“We are not sanctioning any increase in fares, so the position is that there is no new increase in minibus fares on the West Coast of Demerara, from Georgetown to Parika,” Prashad said.
The Minister said that the fare remains the same as the old rates, however, within a month they will meet again to look at the internal fare structure.
Minister Prashad dispelled some reports in the press that the Route 32 Minibus Association has increased the bus fares on the West Coast of Demerara in light of the rise in gas prices.
However, there will be some adjustments within the Georgetown and Parika internal fare structure based on recommendations and suggestions by the Association.
He said that over the years, his Ministry has maintained a very close relationship with the various minibus associations including the #32 Minibus Association.
To this end, Prashad said he met with the Route 32 Minibus Association on Wednesday and had intense discussions regarding the fares for minibus plying the West Coast of Demerara.
He said despite the rumours of one or two members charging more than the regular price, it is not sanctioned officially by the association or his Ministry.
Prashad said that the Government had reduced its excise tax on gasoline and diesel to ensure that the price of gas does not exceed a $1000, and only recently the administration announced steps to reduce the excise tax on diesel from 20 to 15 percent, as a result of upward movement in the world market price for oil.
He assured that the Consumers Affairs Division of his Ministry is monitoring the situation carefully and is working closely with the various minibus associations to ensure that the commuters and consuming public “are not ripped off and at the same time make sure that the minibus owners themselves are not shortchanged”.
