On a day when the veteran riders took the their younger rivals to school, Junior Niles stood out as the best to take the first leg of the Annual Cheddi Jagan Memorial Road Race held in the Ancient County of Berbice yesterday.
Niles’ performance in the race that attracted 67 starters, the biggest ever in the 14 year history, was overwhelming in the 60-mile duel which he won in 2 hours 08 minutes 39 seconds bettering last year’s time of (2 hrs 29 mins 20 secs) by a long way.
Another veteran cyclist took the second spot in Raymond ‘Steely’ Newton who was followed by Eric Sankar, Enzo Matthews, Chris Persaud and 16-year-old Raynauth Jeffrey who not only closed out the top six positions but was the top junior in back to back road races.
Newton and Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay, who has been dominant in Trinidad and Tobago, but could not transfer that dominance here, won two prime prizes each with one going to Sankar, Matthews, Persaud and Alex Mendes in the grueling 67-mile contest which started outside the People’s Progressive Party office New Amsterdam, proceeded to No. 55 Village on the Corentyne before returning for the finish at Port Mourant.
Jeffrey, like Niles who had won the veteran category at the R&R 40-mile race on the West Demerara one week ago, proved that his triumph then was no fluke with another enduring performance as he matched pedals with his much more accomplished compatriots.
Montel Anthony copped the second place in this category with Akeem Arthur placing third.
Dexter Wilson was again the best upright rider claiming the top spot from Shawn Frank and Shawn Mayers in that order.
Naomi Singh won the female contest defeating national champion Hazina Barrett. Ian ‘Dumb Boy’ Jackson was the top veteran with Kennard Lovell and Linden Blackman following in that order, while repeating as the best over-60 rider was Walter Isaacs; Monty Parris was second best but was declared as the oldest rider to compete in the race.
The veteran, upright and female riders started at New Amsterdam, made their way to Hogstyle before finishing at Port Mourant.
Organiser Hassan Mohamed said he was very pleased with the turn out and the competitiveness of the event in all the categories.
Honorable Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, Regional Chairman Zulficar Mustapha and member of the Cheddi Jagan Commemoration Committee Navin Chanderpal all assisted with the presentation of prizes while offering remarks at the presentation ceremony which was chaired by Director of Sport Neil Kumar.
Mohamed thanked Beverage Giants Banks DIH Limited for supplying the water once again, noting that they have been on board from the inception of the race, fourteen years ago. Ricks and sari Group of Companies was also complimented by Mohamed by supplying hampers with their products which were presented to the respective category winners.
The second leg of the race is set for this Sunday on the West Demerara with the third and final leg to be held in Essequibo on Sunday March 27.
