An abusive relationship ended with the death of 20-year-old Farida Ramdeen called ‘Susie’ of Vreed-en-Hoop Squatting Area, West Coast Demerara, whose body was fished out of the Houston Estate Backdam canal yesterday by police.
The woman was reportedly killed on Friday night by her reputed husband, who directed police to where he had dumped her body.
The body was taken to the Lyken Funeral Parlour pending post mortem.
At the scene of the gruesome discovery, residents of Houston, East Bank Demerara converged to get a glimpse of the deceased body, while mutters of speculations surrounding Ramdeen’s death filled the air.
According to reports, her reputed husband, after committing the dastardly act on Ramdeen dumped her body into the Houston Estate canal.
He was subsequently forced by relatives to visit a Police Station where he confessed to the killing.
Police then visited the area where the body was dumped on Saturday night but did not locate the body since the area was dark. However, upon their return yesterday morning the body was found in the canal.
Reports revealed that the couple had recently been living at Middle Road, La Penitence. The accused called ‘Kevin’ hails from Pouderoyen.
According to Indira Ramdeen, the distressed aunt of the deceased, her niece was in an oppressive relationship with a young man, and when relatives found out and confronted her, she normally denied.
“We hear that he use to beat her steady. She is not a girl to go parties, she don’t smoke or drink.”
The aunt said that after receiving the depressing call about her niece’s demise from her sister, she immediately rushed down to Houston. “If he didn’t want her, she brother died the other day and leave a big house, he should have sent her back home, look how far he bring she and kill she, til behind God back where she don’t know.”
Residents of Vreed-en-Hoop Squatting Area and relatives described the deceased as a very quiet and loving girl, who was always polite and willing.
According to relatives, who were summoned to identify her body, Ramdeen’s body had marks of violence.
Her face was black and blue and her left hand had a stab wound.
“She is a left hander and she had to be blocking the jucks that he was firing. He tell the police is three times he duck she in the water and drown she. He then push her underneath some stuff in the water…He is a drug addict and he does work as a garbage collector. He tell them he de drunk and he smoke up,” a relative said.
The dead woman’s grandmother Gladys Ramnarine said that she last saw her granddaughter on Thursday.
She received the news of ‘Susie’s demise in the wee hours of Sunday morning. “He say he carry she by she aunty in town, and she gon cook dey.”
According to the grandmother, ‘Susie’ was killed Friday night and the accused, ‘Kevin’, confided in his cousin about the murder.
However, at first, no one believed what he disclosed.
“To prove it he (Kevin) take them to the spot and they carry him to the station.” “We want justice from the police and courts. This girl did not deserve to die like this,” the relatives collectively agreed.
Meanwhile, relatives of the accused refused to disclose any information pertaining to the murder.
Farida Ramdeen leaves her sister and two brothers to mourn her death.
