Many vendors have been removed from their roadside and street corners where they have conducted business for years and have been relocated to different locations, including market tarmacs, new markets and shopping plazas, But they all say that success has been very limited.
Roadside vendors of Enmore Estate Road have been relocated to the newly constructed market tarmac and many of them say that they prefer the road side. Anand Persaud is one of them.
Mr. Persaud says that business was better outside. He stated that many persons who had never vended on the roadside with his other counterparts were being given preference to the front section and he believed that individuals from the regional council were taking bribes from such persons.
He stated that there wasn’t any random selection of spots for vendors but rather a “first come, first served” basis when they applied to the council for spots.
He pointed out to Kaieteur News a number of vacant spaces at the front of the market and the packed back section. He shared with Kaieteur News that he believed these spots are being reserved by the council for persons who may be paying them off.
He says that they have to pay a fee for a spot per year and one person was allowed a maximum of three spots and he noted that there were individuals occupying the tarmac who had as much as five spots.
Vending only occurs on Fridays in Enmore and the vendors have to pay an additional $200 fee to do so now as opposed to the$80 they were charged on the road.
Persaud and another vendor, Lachmi Parsram, lamented the size of the vending spots which were no more than 6ft by 5ft. They stated that the spots were so small, that they couldn’t construct sheds to shelter customers if rain falls and they knew that many customers wouldn’t come out their house in the rainy weather. Shortly after she stated this, Kaieteur News observed first and what the situation would be like when heavy rains poured down.
Another vendor, Simone Greenidge, during the rainfall said that even if they had the space to construct sheds, they would have to break it down every time because all vendors are required to dismantle their stalls and place them at the back of the tarmac.
This is required since the council rents out the tarmac to cricket groups and promoters who host events such as Bar-B-Q and parties.
Ms. Greenidge stated that the tarmac area that is fenced has no gate. Cattle waltz through the passage and excrete in the area.
Ms. Greenidge, Ms. Parsram and Mr. Persaud who all vend in the market, say that they prefer the roadside over the tarmac because since the past two weeks that they have been relocated, there has been nothing but tension and bad business in the tarmac and they prefer the roadside.
