Quna Skeete appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to the charge of neglecting her children.
Skeete was unrepresented. She pleaded not guilty to the offence.
The court was told by prosecutor, Corporal Venetta Pindar that on February 25, at Quamina Street, Georgetown, the accused neglected her children.
Pindar added that on the day of the incident, the father of the children visited them at Skeete’s home. It was upon his arrival that he discovered that the children were alone. After making several attempts to locate the woman he managed to find her at a rum shop consuming alcohol.
The plaintiff reported the matter to the police and the accused was arrested and charged for the offence.
During the hearing, Skeete explained to the Magistrate that she could not understand the term ‘neglect’. The woman said that on the day in question, she made porridge for the children before bathing them. According to her, the children were left in the care of five adults when the plaintiff arrived and took the children away. The man subsequently returned with a probation officer claiming that Skeete neglected her children.
“My worship I don’t know what they mean by neglect, five, yes five adults dem children were left home with I cant see why I was arrested.” Skeete told the court that she is employed in the interior as a shopkeeper.
Magistrate Beharry however explained to her that she will only be released on condition that she report to the Alberttown Police Station every Monday and Friday at 17:00 hours. The matter will be called again on March 7.
