Water has been restored to the Turkeyen community, the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) said yesterday via release.
On Wednesday, the University of Guyana suspended operations citing the limited water supply at its campus. Yesterday classes resumed with the situation being rectified.
According to the GWI, service has been restored to the Turkeyen community, including the University of Guyana, as well as all sections of Cummings Lodge. However, work continues to fill the service gap which remains after the malfunction of the Turkeyen Number Two Well.
“Currently, customers of Turkeyen, University of Guyana and Cummings Lodge are receiving service by way of the Turkeyen Number Two Well.”
GWI’s Water Resources Engineer, Shimbhudyal Naitram, assured that “we are working around the clock to have the Cummings Lodge Well Station operational.”
The new well station at Cummings Lodge is expected to restore the level of service to its previous standard and will also serve customers of Sophia.
“Priority is being given to all customers affected by the malfunction of the Turkeyen Number Two Well,” added GWI’s Executive Director of Operations, Joseph Coddette.
“We are monitoring Turkeyen, U.G and Cummings Lodge to ensure that adequate water service remains whilst the Cummings Lodge Well is under construction. We are asking our customers for their patience and cooperation as our technical teams work towards restoring service to normalcy.”
On Wednesday, students and teachers were told that classes had been suspended due to the lack of water on the campus.
Since classes resumed for the new semester on January 31, last, the water supply has been limited as a result of the collapse of the No. 1 Turkeyen Well. This well sits at the rear of the University campus near the Dennis Street, Sophia, entrance to the compound.
In the interim, the load was taken up by the No. 2 Turkeyen Well located between the University of Guyana and Cyril Potter College of Education campuses.
GWI had said that the demand on that well was simply too high since the two wells jointly served the two campuses as well as the Turkeyen and Cummings Lodge communities. The resulting flow was limited and saw the campus receiving water only a few hours a day and at very low pressure during these times.
