Dear Editor,
In reference to the exchange of letters between Dr. Steve Surujbally and Mr. Ron Robinson, on the issue about the Link show 27, I would just like to say that I agree completely with Mr. Robinson’s point of view and I cannot understand the position of the Elections Commissioner in criticising that show in any way.
The freedom to make fun of anyone and for how long during any Link show is totally the prerogative of the producers of that show – I am sure that Minister Rohee takes such lark in stride. Dr. Surujbally has been involved in this kind of “entertainment critic” role before with his political-based criticisms of Avatar, the movie put out by James Cameron which was really an excellent production and a joy to view.
Dr.. Surujbally needs to concentrate on the elections this year and put everything in order; he should be recruiting notable personages in our society in TV, radio commercials and the printed press, encouraging people to get registered, pick up their current registration cards (40,000-60,000 cards still not given to potential voters) and urging people to vote on election day.
Dr. Surujbally is paid a very handsome sum to be Elections Commissioner and he should be urging the political parties to have the local elections the same day as the general elections – it can be done, especially since we have had no local elections in 15 years.
The politicians owe local elections to the Guyanese citizens, and as Elections Commissioner, Dr. Surujbally should be taking the lead in making local elections happen instead of worrying about what the Link show portrays in their comedy routine. Come on, Mr. Commissioner, let’s get focused on what is important – we need to leave registration open to all Guyanese until the last week before elections because we need all Guyanese who are qualified to vote to be given that chance.
Mr. Editor, the first local personage Surujballi should use in commercials to strengthen the arms of democracy and get out the urgency of registering to vote and actually voting on Election Day, is Mr. Ron Robinson, who is a well known Guyanese citizen with recognition throughout our society.
