Opener Shemroy Barrington staked a national-team re-call with an entertaining 64 while left-hander Gajanand Singh made an unbeaten 51 on the first day of the two-day National cricket practice match at Bourda yesterday.
When stumps were drawn, Leon Johnson’s X1 were 27-1 off seven overs after losing Rajendra Chandrika, leg before for a first ball duck to Esuan Crandon. T20 opener Richard Ramdeen was unbeaten on 10 and Johnson on seven.
A 66-run first wicket stand between the 23-year-old Barrington and West Indies under-19 left-hander Trevon Griffith (39) provided a solid start for Veerasammy Permaul’s X1 before Gajanand Singh weighted his unbeaten 51 on a slow track and heavy outfield to help his team to 218 all out from 79.3 overs in the final session.
A handful of fans watched in sunny conditions as Barrington, who has played seven first class matches for Guyana including two this season in which he looked good but failed to build on starts, play an array of attractive shots in his 102-ball innings which was decorated with seven fours and a six.
After Griffith, who hit a four and a six was removed by former West Indies under-15 leg-spinner Amir Khan, Barrington struck Khan for two sixes just after lunch before he edged teenage left-arm unorthodox spinner Totaram Bishun to the Keeper to leave the score on 109-2.
Jamal Hinckson seemed a bit unfortunate to be given leg before for 18 to Bishun who also got rid of Steven Jacobs for two. Royston Crandon’s off-spin then accounted for Zaheer Mohamed (13) and National under-19 left-hander Kwame Crosse for a duck while Derwin Christian was run out before he had scored. Gajanand Singh, who has two fifties from his nine First-Class matches, ran out of partners after hitting two fours and a six from 143 balls.
Bishun took 3-19 from nine overs and got support from Crandon (2-6 from 7 overs) and Khan (2-64 from 19.3 overs).
While Esuan Crandon retuned to action after a side strain curtailed his work in Guyana’s third round match in St Vincent two weeks ago, National Skipper Assad Fudadin missed yesterday’s play due to influenza.
Manager Carl Moore informed that Sewnarine Chattergoon was scheduled to see a medical personnel in the city yesterday for a final check-up on a leg injury while explaining that Narsingh Deonarine, who was out of action this season due firstly to a shoulder injury and then ‘tennis elbow’, was expected in Guyana tomorrow. The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) said that both Albion left-handers would have been involved in this practice match.
Another concern is the injury to teenage pacer Rensford Beaton who twisted his ankle during his spell late yesterday but Coach Mark Harper informed that the injury does not look too serious since there was no swelling. He added that Beaton ankle will be looked at this morning after medical attention and a night’s rest.
Play on the final day is scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs and the squad to oppose England Lions at Providence from next Friday will be announced next week.
