Two exciting matches as Mayor’s Cup Football Tournament kicks off this Friday
All systems are in place and come this Friday March 4 the annual Mayor’s Cup Football Tournament will kick off and with two matches scheduled for the Georgetown Football Club Ground starting from 19:00hrs.
The opening encounter will pit the skills of Rhythm Squad against Den Amstel while the feature attraction will see Pele FC taking on Seawall FC in another highly anticipated thriller.

The coaches of both teams are oozing confidence ahead of the encounter and football buffs are assured of an action packed, head on collision.
Gordon Braithwaite is in charge of the Pele squad and he said that he is fielding a formidable lineup that includes such statesmen as Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant, Konata Manning and Daniel Wilson, all marshaling the midfield. Add the skills of Marvin Joseph, Sheldon Holder and Stellon David, all mean strikers, and Seawall will have their work cut out for them.
The anticipation becomes even more intense when one remembers that Pele had suffered an ignominious defeat when these two teams squared off in last year’s edition of the championships. “Admittedly, Pele lost the game but we had no one but ourselves to blame for that,” said Braithwaite. He explained that his men were scrappy on the field and wasted a lot of good opportunities. “This time around it will be a different kettle of fish since we are coming with blood in our eyes,” pronounced Braithwaite.
Seawall FC coach Delon Josiah scoffed at Braithwaite’s pronouncements while promising to inflict similar pain on the team. “We played a strategically sound game last year and deserved to win,” he said. He further explained that he has devised a plan that will see his boys repeating the feat. “We will be playing tight football; leaving our opponents with as little maneuvering space as possible,” intimated the Seawall FC coach. He also said that the game plan is simple and “once we stick to those plans there is no way that we are going to lose.” The battle lines have been drawn and both teams will be going after a win which transfers to an exciting ‘don’t you dare miss it’ encounter.
The action gets underway at 18:00hrs with Rhythm Squad taking on Den Amstel. Meanwhile, organiser of the tournament, Lennox Arthur is appealing to corporate Guyana for support in ensuring the tournament is successful.

He is also grateful for the chivalry extended so far by several corporate entities but looks forward to added support.
Mr. Arthur said that he has recognised the financial challenges faced by the participating teams during preparations for the tournament and has increased the prizes.
The winners of the tournament receive one million dollars while the runners-up take home half that amount. The third and fourth place finishers receive two hundred thousand and one hundred thousand dollars, respectively.
