Dear Editor,
The membership of the PNCR has chosen their Presidential Candidate in the person of Mr. David Granger retired Brigadier. The task ahead is for Mr. Granger along with the leadership of the party, to garner the support of the masses for the 2011 National and Regional Elections.
How this is going to be done I am not sure but I trust that Mr. Granger as Presidential Candidate will be given the opportunity to put together a team that will be able to withstand and work assiduously to get rid of the PPP/C regime.
While I am glad that the process is over, the results have left me like so many others with more questions than answers. I am not convinced that the results are a true reflection of the will of the people. I base my arguments on the following:
• Mr. Granger was the only candidate who was backed and fully supported by the leadership and enjoyed the party’s machinery to its fullest since the party PR Department was always present at all of Mr. Grainger visits throughout the country.
• Mr. Granger had a distinct advantage over all the other candidates since he commenced campaigning long before all of the other candidates, in particular Mr. Carl Greenidge, whom he defeated by a mere two per cent. How reflective is this of the will of the people?
• Mr. Greenidge having started his campaign in January 2011 has indeed shown that he was a formidable person for the Presidential Candidate. To garner 39 per cent of the votes at the elections should be of concern for the leadership of the party.
• None of the two front runners could have mustered 50 per cent support of the membership so it is clear that there is some disunity among the membership.
On can only hope that good sense will prevail and like Mr. Granger had mentioned, he will seek to invite persons who would have left the party to return, something that will be pursed immediately and vigorously.
However I wonder how successful Mr. Granger will be in his efforts since there are some members in the party both at the level of the leadership and ordinary members that are bent on perpetrating divisiveness in the party. If this trend continues then instead of getting rid of the monster then we will be only allowing the monster to remain and cause harm to our country.
From reports received there was plenty of enthusiasm shown by persons during the elections time and person stood steadfast at the counting of the ballots, I am glad such enthusiasm was displayed and I hope that come Elections Day 2011 persons will display the same and will not run from the polling stations before the conclusion of the poll, which is inclusive of the counting of ballots.
Finally, Editor after such a close result between Mr. Granger and Mr. Greenidge would it not have been a good idea to have a run off between the two candidate so that the result will surely be reflective of the will of the people.
