Auditor General Deodat Sharma has been called upon to investigate “significant financial irregularities” in the Accountant General Department within the Ministry of Finance.
Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh in a letter to the Auditor General on Monday noted that “payments of superannuation benefits have been made to officials for whom initial reviews have been shown to be highly irregular and designed to avoid standard financial and accounting procedures.”
A source within the Ministry of Finance said that the Finance Minister called in the Attorney General and Commissioner of Police Henry Greene to inform them of the seriousness with which he views this development.
For some time now there have been mutterings about financial irregularities within the Finance Ministry, but confirming these reports proved difficult.
Contacted for a comment, Dr Ashni Singh said that he would not tolerate any such nonsense in his Ministry or anywhere. He said that the irregularities were picked up during routine checks. He disclosed that based on internal works the internal investigators uncovered enough evidence of the irregular payments.
The Auditor General was not available for comment, but people close to the investigation said that there will be a special probe.
The source could not say how much money is at stake or how far back the trail goes.
“This thing was only discovered recently and we are now seeking a special investigation,” the source said.
It was emphasised by the source that the Finance Minister wants the perpetrators to be identified in a hurry. Dr. Singh’s letter to the Auditor General stated, “I am calling on the Audit to move expeditiously to mount a special investigation into this matter and provide me a report urgently on the outcome of your investigation.
“The Ministry of Finance will provide you all the necessary co-operation and support in your investigation.”
And late yesterday afternoon the police took in a Finance Ministry staff member for questioning.
