Dear Editor,
I am asking this government to open up the state owned media in particular, Channel 11, to all the opposition of credibility, like PNC/R’s Mr. Granger or AFC’s Mr. Ramjattan, so that the citizens of Linden, Bartica , Upper Berbice and elsewhere can listen to all the differing opinions , all in a peaceful environment.
Government should also open up the Chronicle to opposition views and let credible entrepreneurs have radio licences to broadcast to our citizens; allow free air time to all opposition parties on your radio station, the only one in the country.
And please allow Mr.Sharma licences to broadcast Channel Six to every single part of Guyana. Also , give Channel 9 (which has been around for quite a few years) and other private TV stations the rights and relevant licences to broadcast nationwide, which a true democracy should dispence ,so that their businesses and capacity to reach all Guyanese are increased.
Editor, the freedom of the press and the right to a free and fair election, the embryos of a true democracy, is more important than any micro- or macro- development plan and overshadows the narrow view of any political party’s self interests or claims to progress.
The revolutionary upheavals in the Arab world underline these truths.
This government should allow all the people of Guyana to have a full range of opinions aired to them; all government controlled media is funded by the citizens and should be open to all viewpoints immediately.
