Thirty newly commissioned officers of the Guyana Defence Force, were yesterday presented with their instruments of commission by Commander-in-Chief, President Bharrat Jagdeo at a special ceremony at the Guyana International Conference Centre, Lilendaal.
The new Officers comprised 12 from the recently concluded Reserve Officers’ Course. The remainder were those who came from the Standard Officers’ Course Number 43.
They are now officially Second Lieutenants.
Additionally, seven Warrant Officers were presented with their State Warrants by the Commander in Chief in the presence of Chief of Staff, Commodore Gary Best, other senior officers and a few family members.
The ranks pledged their allegiance to defend the state from all enemies, and to protect the constitution while administering their duties without fear or favour, affection or ill-will.
Top student of the Standard Officers’ Course, Jamal Scott, delivered the vote of thanks on behalf of the newly commissioned officers after which they participated in the taking of a group photograph with the Commander in Chief and the Chief of Staff.
The largest batch of new GDF officers, 56, was commissioned by the late President Desmond Hoyte in 1985.
Meanwhile at the same ceremony yesterday, President Jagdeo personally decorated his Aide De Camp, Ronald Hercules with his new badge of rank, that of Lieutenant Colonel.
It was the first time that the Commander in Chief personally decorated a senior military officer.
Lt. Col. Hercules has been serving as the President’s ADC for a number of years, following the removal of his long standing predecessor Major Francis Abraham.
