Rashad Hussain captures junior title
Wendell Meusa made a grand return to competitive chess after undergoing a short ban instituted by the Disciplinary Committee of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF), defeating a team of competent players to take the honours in the DDL Topco Juices Republic Anniversary one day Rapid Chess Tournament last Saturday at the Keishar’s Sports Club.
The prolific chess player rebounded from a drawn sixth round encounter against Learie Webster to eventually defeat all other comers and eventually accrued 6 ½ points at the end of the tournament. Learie Webster ended on 5 ½ points and occupied the second place while Alexander Duncan closed off the podium spots with 5 points.
The other points standing are, Irshad Mohamed (4 ½), Dennis Dillon and Rodwell Poole (4 apiece), Glenford Corlette and Steve Leung finished in the cellar on 3 points each.
Meanwhile, Rashad Hussain continued his excellent form to cart off the honours in the junior category. This is Hussain’s second major win for the year.
The winner was, however, decided after the tiebreaker method was employed after Raan Motilall finished the tournament on a similar score. Motilall occupied the second place while Saeed Ali finished third. The other points standing are: Saeed Ali (4 ½), Anthony Drayton, Ron Motilall and Suhai Feng (4 points each), Joshua Pedro and Avinash Kishun (3 ½ points apiece), Davion Mars, Vaughn Moses and Winston William all finished on 3 points apiece.
The tournament was sponsored exclusively by DDL under the Topco Juices Brand.
