Teacher held for questioning in relation to mason’s death

A school teacher remains in police  custody for questioning in relation to the death of Sherlock Jones who passed away on Saturday afternoon after taking a sip of rum that was reportedly offered to him by the said teacher.
Prior to his death, Jones along with five other men was carrying out a “full cast” in the teacher’s yard at Middle Road La Penitence Georgetown, when he took a sip of five-year-old rum and subsequently complained of feeling unwell.
Minutes after reaching Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation Jones succumbed while doctors were battling to save his life.
Apparently health personnel became suspicious of the cause of Jones’ death and contacted law enforcement ranks. Within minutes, lawmen from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrived and took the teacher into custody.
She was later seen being escorted by a female officer from the hospital’s police outpost.
According to a police source, the woman is still in their custody and investigations are continuing.
Jones, who was a mason, resided at Den Amstel, West Coast Demerara.
He left his home early Saturday morning and reported for work at Middle Road, La Penitence.
According to one of his colleagues, who was reluctant to identify himself, the boss man collected a bottle of five-year-old liquor from the owner of the house where they were working and Jones decided to take a “shot”.
He was afterward rushed to GPHC in a semi-unconscious condition in a next door neighbour’s vehicle, accompanied by the teacher and one of his colleagues.
At the hospital, the colleague was overheard telling the neighbour who transported Jones that he too was felling a little upset after drinking the said rum.
Tests are expected to be carried out on the colleague.
