An 18-year-old on several armed robbery charges and who was once charged with murder has been positively identified as the gunman who killed Linden businessman Albert ‘Bolo’ Joseph last month.
Police said that the suspect, Collis Collison, of South Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, was picked out during a police identification parade yesterday. He is likely to appear in court this week.
A police statement said that the teen was also identified as the suspect in an armed robbery committed on the A & R Cosmetics and General Store at Dageraad Avenue, Linden, on January 7, 2011, during which Angelique Temal and sales clerk Nigel Muss were robbed of jewellery and cash.
“The suspect is currently on remand on charges following investigations into an armed robbery committed recently in Kitty, Georgetown, during which a firearm was recovered,” the statement added.
Collison, was also charged recently for allegedly robbing Irene Arjune at gunpoint of a quantity of articles valued $693,000 in the vicinity of Robb Street.
Police officials said that the teen was also charged some time ago with the murder of a Bartica resident. The charge was changed to manslaughter.
Speaking to Kaieteur News, Assistant Commissioner David Ramnarine expressed gratitude to the police ranks who worked on the case and to the civilians who provided police with vital leads.
“I would like to thank the residents of Linden for their patience and understanding.”
He said that detectives gathered more than 40 statements during their investigation.
“The good work by detectives in E and F Division, who were also sure that we would make headway not only in the robbery/murder but also the robbery in Dageraad Avenue, speaks volumes for law enforcement, not only in that division, but in the country as a whole.”
Albert Joseph was shot in the stomach and left side on January 3, 2011, while tending to his Sunflower Street, Wismar store.
The bandit escaped with less than $10,000 and a gold chain the businessman was wearing. Joseph succumbed about a week later.
