Maurice Retemiah and Rachael Connelly captured the male and female open category 10K cycle road race organised by the Essequibo Islands Secondary School of Wakenaam last Friday.
Kemo Paul carted off the U-15 male title while Fazeena Hamid and Christen Chowtie were tied in first place in the female category.
The race, which started at 10am from Sans Souci Junction and proceeded to Fredericksburg village before returning to the starting point, saw 16 males and 10 females competing for the open titles and 15 males and 10 females battling for the U-15 crowns.
Retemiah clocked 29:02 minutes while Connelly finished the race in 35:01 minutes. Kemo Paul’s time was 32:04 minutes while Hamid and Chowtie both managed the event in 38:06 minutes.
The winners were presented with trophies and monetary incentives.
Sheik Ahmad, a teacher said that the island has lots of talent in this field and calls on the National Cycling Federation to send coaches to the Island.
The race was sponsored by Feroze Amin, N.K Jairam, Sahadeo General Store, Nazir Mohamed, Wazir Khan, Anil Makeram, Noon Persaud General Store and Satnarine Singh.
