The GT&T 10/10 has begun with over 400 matches completed over the weekend according to a release from the organisers, the Guyana Softball League.
The atmosphere at most grounds was very heartening as lots of people turned out and witnessed exciting cricket. The first day saw the Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony and Mr. Yog Mahadeo the Chief Executive Officer of sponsor GT&T addressing the media and the gathering at Everest cricket ground.
The participants and supporters also saw Dr. Anthony facing the first ball to usher in the tournament and that ball was bowled by Mr. Mahadeo and after which they both made short addresses. They both agreed that this tournament is a first for Guyana and the Caribbean where 1224 teams have been entered. In addition 209 of those teams are females which augur well for communities and the interest in cricket.
A total of 409 matches were completed for the weekend. The teams played some entertaining cricket with four centuries scored in the male category and records were created. The female category saw the highest score of the weekend that being R. George of Buxton All Stars clobbering 140 not out which included 20×6 with her team defeating Annandale Panthers by 117 runs.
Other records created were two helmet-tricks being achieved and in one match in Berbice one of the semifinalist in the 2010 tournament, Memorex XI, made the highest score surpassing the previous highest score by rattling up 278-2 in 10 overs.
They beat the opposing team by 266 runs. In that match 44 runs were scored in one over in which Michael Ramdial (Memorex) clobbered 6 sixes. The over was bowled by Royden Fraser. Troy Kippins also took 4wickets for one run in 2 overs in that match. Roy Jafferally, also of Memorex, made 117 not out.
In other zones Shawn Grovesnor of Adventure Sports Club of North Essequibo hit a top score of 121 which included 20 sixes as his team won by 95 runs. Shannon Jagmohan of All Stars, who are playing in the North Essequibo zone, also made a destructive 119 as his team amassed 219-1 and then destroyed Ledgen Boys by 119 runs.
Ramnauth of Sandust XI playing in the lower East Coast also scored a century 102 not out as his team defeated their opponents by 139 runs. The lowest total was made by Angoy’s Avenue Youth Friendly Space as they went down for 12 playing in the New Amsterdam zone.
One of The helmet-tricks was achieved in the East Bank Zone.
There were other notable achievements that were very heartening for softball cricket. The youngest player was nine years old and the oldest was 62 years old. The game brought out numerous families as all the grounds were filled with participants and supporters.
The GT&T models and marketing staff were also out at the venues as lots of giveaways and as well as promotions were on show.
