“At this time it is intricate for me to give you the total cost because it is a continuous project,” responded Rawle Edinboro, Chief Development Planner of the Ministry of Housing and Central Authority, to a question on the prize tag attached to the Brickdam project.
Minister Irfaan Ally, when asked about the amount of funds allocated for the restoration of the capital city, said that he was not in a position to give such information.
A press release on the briefing on the project was sent to Kaieteur News but reporters refused to attend.
What is puzzling is that the Chief Planning Officer said that his department is not responsible for the cost of the project.
“My department does not deal with project costs. What we are focusing on is the restoration of urban spaces in the city at this time.”
The Brickdam beautification site falls within the Greater Georgetown Development Plan (GGDP) defines as ‘conservation area’.
Edinboro said that the objective inherent in the site design and development is to stimulate the progressive transformation of the quality of the city’s environment, based on modern city planning standards.
It is expected that the development of the site as a multi-use urban recreational (open) space will have a catalytic effect on the overall thrust towards the enhancement of value urban spaces within the city of Georgetown.
He also noted that in this way the project will significantly impact on the notion of restoring Georgetown as ‘the Garden City’.
The Brickdam beautification project is aimed at restoring the pre-historic beauty of the capital city. The project site is the former Bureau pf Statistics building located at Brickdam and High Street.
This project will also enhance and add diversity to the urban core and recreational, historic/education and; tourist value.
The dilapidated structure which was torn down some time last year was an old airport terminal building that was relocated from a previous site and re-assembled on the present site.
According to Edinboro, the Brickdam project is scheduled to be concluded by the end of this year. He went on to explain that the ‘Brickdam project’ is not the end of the beautification works to the city.
He stressed that plans are already in the pipeline to enhanced and revamp other key areas around Georgetown.
As it is, the construction team currently carrying out works has been deployed by the Ministry of Housing and Water. Engineers from the said Ministry are also supervising works, according to Edinboro.
“Those persons working on the site are construction employees of the Ministry of Housing”.
Responding to the question of security when works are completed, the planning officer said that like any other developed historical memorial, security personnel will be contracted. Security guards will be looking over the site on a 24-hour base.
