The battered body of Rishi Persaud, 36, called “Web or Spider” of Lot 12 Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara, (EBD) was found in the bush corner of Esau Street, Land of Canaan, yesterday.
Residents in the area disclosed that the body was discovered lying in the bush corner at sunrise, and that there were marks of violence. It was also noted that blood was oozing from the ears, eyes and mouth.
According to Ron Persaud, a brother of the dead man, he last saw his brother alive at 19:00hrs Friday when his brother asked for money to buy an aerated beverage. He said that he could not think of anyone who was an enemy of his brother and who would want to harm him in anyway.
Residents agreed that Persaud was an alcoholic who would do odd jobs in the neighbourhood to survive; however, he was not a violent man. They said that he would use indecent language when taunted by persons in the neighbourhood.
“He was not married but all dem woman he does call he sister in the village, because he grow up here; he was a really helpful and honest person,” one woman said.
According to Devika Lobin, Persaud grew up with her in the village and he was not a thief. He would always ask for something if he needed it. “He don’t trouble people thing and when you send he to the shop he does bring back your direct change whether he drunk or sober.”
She said that Persaud had a very hard life from childhood. He had 15 brothers and sisters. “When they were young and everybody was sleeping their father would carry them early to cut cane. None of them ever got the opportunity to attend school.”
Lobin said that Persaud’s brothers and sisters all died in various accidents. He was also involved in several accidents. Only four siblings remain. One young relative said that Persaud had complained that a vehicle’s rear view mirror was damaged after it had hit him on his shoulder at 18:30 hrs while he was walking on the Public Road in Land of Canaan.
Residents are suggesting that Persaud was beaten in another area and the perpetrators did not realise that he was dead when they dumped the body into the bush corner of Esau Street, EBD.
“This man couldn’t have been beaten in this street because everybody would have heard him screaming. His mouth big and everybody would have heard.” Persaud leaves his brother and a niece with whom he lived to mourn his passing.
