Anna Regina student cops Anne Blue Award
Dedication to schoolwork, complemented by her involvement in co-curricular activities, did not only ensure Erica Singh an impressive scholastic achievement, but it also helped her to attain the coveted Anne Blue Scholarship Award.
The 17-year-old student of Anna Regina Secondary was presented with the accolade which will cover her academic expenses at the University of Guyana. It will also see her picture and name being affixed to a plaque which has the names of other students who were recipients of the award.
The plaque will be placed on display at Anna Regina Secondary until the next presentation ceremony at which point it will be entrusted to the care of the school which the awardee attends.
Erica celebrated her 17th birthday on Friday, last, and wholeheartedly accepted the award on the same day, even as she assured that she would continue her studies with distinction. She has plans to pursue studies at the university level in the field of business.
Friday’s presentation was held at the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD) and represented the 16th such ceremony and the seventh time in the past eight years that the award was copped by the Region Two School.
But according to Assistant Chief Education Officer (ag), Ms Doomattie Singh, there is no reason why the award cannot be presented to students from other regions. She expressed the need for the other regions to take more responsibility in highlighting the existence of the scholarship so that students can seek to qualify for its benefit.
“It is our hope at the secondary level that as a result of this significant exercise, Regional Education Officers and the Principal Personnel Officers of Georgetown will pledge to have greater and wider publication of this scholarship in their respective districts.”
The objective of the Anne Blue Award is to offer young people a chance to realise their potential and accomplish their goals by: assisting them to complete their high school education; affording them the opportunity to pursue high education and to foster academic excellence through competition.
Such special awards are also offered to the other schools that Anne Blue, a Guyanese by birth who died in the prime of her life, had attended. The schools include St Gabriel’s Primary, the Bishops’ High and the University of Guyana.
Detailing Erica Singh’s scholastic achievement, the Senior Education Officer said that the student had gained more than 80 percent in all annual examinations ranging from Grade Seven through 11. At the 2010 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate, she secured four distinctions, four grade one and five grade two passes. She was also very much involved in a number of co-curricular activities including debates, peer education, athletics and religious engagements, among others.

Presenting the award on Friday was member of the Anne Blue Foundation, Mr Kingsley Nelson, who revealed that the decision to start the scholarship was kicked into motion in 1994 and has continued annually.
“We are happy to recognise and be associated with one such aspirant in the form of Erica Singh…We are happy to be a part of her wellbeing. We appreciate that her education efforts and achievements to date have not only satisfied the standard of brilliance, but she showcases the results of the supportive efforts ploughed into the achievement by her parents, school teachers and the officers of the Ministry of Education,” Nelson added.
