A popular local businessman was given an ultimatum by the Better Hope Neighbourhood Democratic Council to produce a copy of his transport for a plot of land in Happy Acres East Coast Demerara, which he unlawfully claimed to own, or face eviction.
The plot of land in question is a one-acre plot that was designated for a playfield. The businessman has already fenced it, much to the anger of concerned residents.
Residents in the community labeled the businessman as an ‘untouchable’ and they are hoping that the authorities do everything within their power to stop him from taking over the small upscale community, which is home to a current and a former Government Minister as well as a prominent Permanent Secretary.
They believe that the businessman is closely connected to a senior official at Office of the President hence his apparent power to do as he pleases.
Kaieteur News understands that the location has two areas earmarked as playfields. On Friday, the businessman began constructing a fence around one of the areas.
Concerned residents reported the matter to the NDC and an investigation was launched.
An official at the NDC office at Better Hope confirmed that the NDC had received complaints from the residents and immediately sent out officers to investigate.
The official said that at the scene, the NDC officers were told by employees erecting the fence that the land was private property and that the owner has a transport.
However when they demanded that the transport be produced, this was not forthcoming.
A notice was subsequent to the businessman for him to cease the project but this fell on deaf ears as workers continued to place barbed wires around the perimeter of the playfield.
“According to our records, this area has not been sold to anyone since it designated a playfield. We would have been notified by transport of any sale of the land. Only God above knows how he (the businessman) acquired it, but these things happen,” the NDC official stated.
Residents claimed that although they knew that the area was designated a playfield, they initially remained silent when they observed the fence being erected.
“Wha we gon do. Dem man ah big man. Big money pass,” one of the residents told this newspaper.
This news paper went to the businessman’s home a short distance from the playfield to enquire about the situation and was greeted by another controversial sight.
There the businessman, a popular automobile dealer, has erected a barrier preventing access to three quarters of the street in which he resides.
After being told that he was not at home, a reporter from this newspaper enquired from the security guard why the barriers were erected but he could not give an reasonable answer.
The businessman has arbitrarily erected a barrier to prevent persons from using a section of the road in the community.
“We have sent him several notices on this matter and he has not complied. Our next step is to take him to court,” the NDC official stated.
This newspaper was told that the businessman is linked to a controversial official from the Office of the President who has been fingered in several controversial dealings.
