Dear Editor,
Malcolm Harripaul’s letter (Kaieteur News, February 24) is composed of the worst trash I have ever read in any newspaper, even outdoing the nonsense one sees in the Chronicle.
That this man could denigrate President Cheddi the way he does shows the snake pit he crawled out of; he blames all the woes in our political system on that great man who sacrificed his very being for the people of Guyana.
Imagine, Harripaul dares to accuse President Cheddi of “race politics” showing the shallowness of his thinking and in the eyes of anyone observing his written words one would just chuckle at his sheer stupidity.
President Cheddi died in 1997 and what has transpired since has nothing to do with him. Jagan was always a reformer, revolutionary and embraced ideas even if imminent danger or destruction came his way; he endured for 28 years, never bitter, never revengeful, never corrupt, never selling out his beliefs and always ready to accommodate change for the good of all Guyanese.
Jagan was a Marxist but most importantly, he was a Guyanese nationalist and a humanist; Jagan was an E. Indian but he was for all Guyanese at all times, never for E.Indian interests alone; Jagan was the brain and spine of the PPP but since his death, nothing has been the same, because that great helmsman knew how to involve cross sections of the Guyanese nation in re-building our dear country; Jagan was an international leader who is almost always referred to in glowing terms by people and nations abroad and yet he was at home in the poorest household in Guyana.
President Cheddi’s record speaks for itself and this Malcolm Harripaul probably doesn’t believe in a God but the slander against Jagan which he writes one day will come back to haunt his very existence. God will punish him for the lies and slander he concocts against one of the greatest sons of Guyana.
His endorsement of Mr. Granger is part of his pitch and I hope that Mr. Granger will, in a public gesture, distance himself and condemn the words of Harripaul against President Cheddi. For Granger, as a potential national leader, this Harripaul is a real source of embarrassment and could result in votes been lost if he can’t control the venom and lies which this obviously disgruntled individual puts out.
There is a saying that “the pen is mightier than the sword”, but for Harripaul, the pen is the sword. Unfortunately, he does not know the difference and that is why he will wallow in his stupidity, lost in his apparent anger, boxed in by his obvious frustrations and frightened by Jagan’s good name which will stand and grow while his (Harripaul) life’s imprint will slowly disappear as Guyanese ask themselves:” who is this buffoon Harripaul who dares to criticise President Cheddi”.
