Three men were yesterday brought by law enforcement ranks from the Ancient County to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court after they were accused of pilfering several drums of fuel from Rusal Bauxite Company.
According to the police, Devon Tappin, 33; Robert Moore, 57; and Dellon Benjamin, 23, on February 15, carted off 195 gallons of diesel worth $124,000, from Rusal Bauxite Company, in the Berbice River.
Prosecutor, Sergeant Lionel Harvey added that on the day of the incident, the three accused went into Rusal compound without authority and loaded four 45-gallons and one five gallons drums of the company’s fuel into a canter truck and drove off.
They were subsequently stopped by the security guard on duty at the front gate of the compound. Tappin who was the driver at the time, manage to drive the truck #GKK 312 a short distance away before abandoning it.
After the matter was reported to the police, the three suspects were arrested.
Magistrate turned attorney-at-law Gordon Gilhuys made an appearance for the three accused. In addressing the court, he stated that Tappin, who is a father of two minors, is employed by the company as a mechanic. Tappin resides at lot 59 One Mile Extension Arima, Berbice, with his family. Gilhuys went on to explain to the court that Benjamin who lives at lot 616 Amelia’s Ward, Linden is Tappin’s cousin. The accused recently graduated from the Linden Technical Institute and is currently seeking employment.
The lawyer added that Moore, who resides at lot 444 Arima, Berbice, was on duty in the Rusal generator room at the time of the incident.
That being said the attorney made a submission for his clients to be granted their pre-trial liberty in a reasonable sum, citing the fact that “nothing was found on the three accused.”
The prosecutor did not object, but requested that bail be set in a substantial amount.
It was for that reason that Magistrate Beharry allowed the three bail in the sum of $125,000 each. The matter will be called again on March 18, at Kwakwani Magistrates’ Court. A fourth suspect, Andrew Grimmon, was held by the security guard on the day of the incident but was released.
