Guyana’s international track and field star, Aliann Pompey arrived in Georgetown yesterday for the National Sports Commission (NSC) Awards Ceremony following its postponement to March 4 and her previous commitment to attend the national awards.
However, Pompey sucked up the disappointment and went about a busy schedule that included a courtesy call on telecommunications giant Digicel Guyana, which is one of the country’s leading corporate supporters of sports, and more so, Track and Field.
Just a few weeks ago, the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) presented Digicel ‘Sponsor of the Year’ at its Award Ceremony. Pompey met and talked with Digicel’s Chief Executive Officer, Gregory Dean and Business Development Manager, Gavin Hope.
In relating her immediate international focus to Dean, Pompey said that she has her eyes fixed on the World Championships and 2012 London Olympics. “I would take any medal at Worlds,” she stated jokingly during the courtesy call at Digicel’s Kingston Office.
Pompey discussed a range of issues with Hope, Dean and AAG President, Colin Boyce, who was also part of the forum. Dean wished her all the best in the future and success with her desire to be on the medal podium at the World Championships and Olympics.
Pompey won her second Commonwealth Games medal last year in New Delhi, India. Apart from becoming the only Guyanese athlete in any sport with two Commonwealth Games medals, Pompey was the only athlete on a full-fledged national team to win a medal last year.
Her silver medal performance was eight years after her gold medal in Manchester, England in the 400m, which is her main event. The quarter-miler was ranked fifth in the world last year and was a strong contender for the NSC Award that Shondell Alfred won.
The NSC Award Ceremony was first set for February 19 before it was postponed to February 25, which is the date Pompey was accommodating with her arrival here. However, it was postponed for a second time to March 4, but Pompey is expected to depart Tuesday.
Pompey had already secured her airline ticket when she learnt of the postponement. She said that it would not have been feasible to cancel the ticket because of the attached fine so she decided to use the opportunity to visit nevertheless. Her last visit was in 2008.
Despite the national snub, the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) Headquarters, where she was located yesterday, became a hive of activity with several friends and well-wishers descending on the venue to either talk with or get a first-hand glimpse of the athlete. The GOA has planned an official press conference with the athlete today at 3pm.
