Former Kaieteur News reporter tops Standard Officers’ Course

After almost one year of rigorous training, 49 young men and three young women were commissioned as officers in their respective disciplined services.
The new officers successfully completed the Standard Officers’ Course Number 43 and the Reserve Officers’ Course Number 15.
They received their badges of ranks from Commander-in-Chief, President Bharrat Jagdeo at a special parade on the drill square of the headquarters of the Guyana Defence Force, Camp Ayanganna.
The newly appointed officers from the Standard Officers’ Course were drawn from the Guyana Defence Force (16); the Guyana Police Force (16); the Guyana Fire Service (3); the Guyana Prison Service (3) and one from the Belize Defence Force.
Twelve persons completed the Reserve Officers’ Course.
Both courses were held at the Colonel Ulric Pilgrim Officer Cadet School, which is the first Officer Cadet School in the English-speaking Caribbean.
Former Kaieteur News Reporter, Jamal Scott emerged as the best graduating student of the course and was awarded the Brazilian and Venezuelan Armed Forces prizes.
Another rank from the Guyana Defence Force, Jamaine Lovelle was named the Runner-up Best Student, to go with his Best Military Knowledge prize.
President Jagdeo presiding in his final commissioning ceremony as Commander-in-Chief, urged the new officers to focus on the vision that the government has outlined for Guyana – one that is security-oriented, with an economic focus that will not only benefit them as individuals but the organizations which they will serve.
“As young members of the Disciplined Services and moreso as young citizens of our country, you are to see yourselves as having more than just a passing interest in this vision and the transformation that is already well underway in our country.”
The Head-of-State said that it goes without saying that the Guyana of tomorrow belongs to the young people of today.
He stated that as an institution, the army and the other Disciplined Services provide opportunities for training and personal development that are incomparable, while the environment provides discipline that is second to none.
“You are to consider yourselves fortunate now to have access to those opportunities and I urge you to take full advantage of them as you prepare to take your place in the Guyana of tomorrow,” the President said.
Chief-of-Staff Gary Best reminded the new officers that yesterday marked the beginning of a new phase in their lives, as it signals the ceremonial change from civilian status.
He added that it also heralded the beginning of a professional career that could last for as much as 33 years, if their personal life goals coincided with the organisation’s.
“You are never going to be the same person you were. Even after you leave the Defence Force in years to come our mark, the military stamp that has been embedded in you, is a permanent one and one recognizable throughout our country as well as in any part of the world,” the Chief of Staff said.
