David Granger launches book on Public Security

Brigadier (ret.) David A. Granger launched his latest book last evening at Congress House in Sophia with a simple ceremony.
The book entitled “Public Security; Criminal Violence and Policing in Guyana” was described as “Chronicling Guyana’s history in a simple and dynamic way in the eyes of a soldier”.
“Public Security” is a compilation of 20 essays that Granger had written in the past and it deals with issues occurring in the past 10 years in Guyana.
According to Shadow Finance Minister, Volda Lawrence, who gave a synopsis of the book, “It examines how criminal activity flourishes when public policy fails”. She further stated that the discussions in the book are “devoid of political rhetoric with its purpose being to find a solution”.
In his essays, Granger, shed light upon the Government’s deteriorated “Target Special Squad” who performed many atrocities on patriots including “unwarranted activities” that resulted in retaliation, which saw many hard-working police officials murdered. He also shed light on drug trafficking, the Bartica massacre and domestic abuse to name a few compelling aspects.
Lawrence commended him for including domestic violence in the book because she believed that “it has become so entrenched in society that no day passes without such an incident” and stressed that the issue needed to be more extensively addressed.
She expressed the belief that Granger had “succeeded in highlighting ideal affected aspects of Guyana’s social security, and she stated that in addition to this publication, much more has to be done to sensitise and improve public security in the country. In concluding, Lawrence commended Granger for a “job well done” and expressed pleasure at being able to officially launch the book.
Granger shared with the audience at the launching, which included the likes of PNCR-1G leader, Robert Corbin, and Former Commissioner of Police, Winston Felix, that he wrote the book in an effort to sensitise the public on social issues. Another reason was to challenge the statement of Guyana being optimally secured.
“Does man brutally kills father represent optimal security? Is unidentified body floating in canal optimal security as well?”
Granger referenced the tragic and violent past and present state of the country and addressed the question rhetorically several times, “Is this optimal security?” The retired Brigadier believes that the current system needs to be reformed and opined that only with a new administration in power will optimal security be achieved. He also pledged to patriotism and his vision for a safe and violence-free Guyana.
“An authentic read and a viable piece of history,” was how PNCR Central Executive member Cheryl Sampson described the book, while advocating for widespread access to it. She urged the younger generation to alleviate their ignorance on social issues and read the book. “Public Security; Criminal Violence and Policing in Guyana” is available at a cost of G$2,000.
Brigadier (ret.) Granger has written several books on military history, defence and security. These include Five-Thousand Day War: The Struggle for Haiti’s Independence, 1789-1904; National Defence: A Brief History of the Guyana Defence Force, 1965-2005; The British Guiana Volunteer Force, 1948-1966; The Guyana People’s Militia, 1976-1997; The Guyana National Service, 1974-2000 and The Queen’s College Cadet Corps, 1889-1975.
