Rehabilitation works on Stelling View market pathways have not commenced as yet. Two weeks ago, Kaieteur News was at the market and vendors expressed concern over the state of the pathways.
This was hampering them from transporting goods into their stalls and during bad weather, adversely affected the construction process as well.
The relocated vendors were given a deadline of March 2 to complete building their stalls, which was specified by the city council, should be of concrete. However, there was no deadline for the rehabilitation works. The market is to have its grand opening next month end.
Schulder Griffith, the Clerk of Markets, confirmed to Kaieteur News that indeed the council had given the vendors a deadline of March 2 to complete construction and that the market would be officially opened around March 30.
Mr. Griffith said that comments that the market, which has an unproductive past, could fail again and could eventually lead to an unproductive environment again. He added that many persons do not even know that Stelling View exists and that the new complex would be managed and marketed well, especially through televised advertisements.
Kaieteur News understands that Stelling View has formed a market committee and that the vendors are currently in talks with Mr. Griffith, who has agreed to extend the stalls construction deadline.
Mr. Griffith could not give a definite answer about the rehabilitation of the pathways but he said, “Before the opening”.
A vendor nearby expressed regret over his response because they were promised quite some time ago that the pathways would be completed.
