Now set for Saturday March 5
The Inclement weather continues to wreck havoc with sporting activities in the Country. The ancient county has not been spared, one such activity in which the organizers will have to do it all over again was the 5th Annual Pocket Rocket Inter Gym Boxing competition which was slated for last Sunday at The All Saints Scott Church Ground at Princess Elizabeth and Vryheid Road in New Amsterdam.
The incessant rain made sure that not a punch was thrown. The organizers have now rescheduled the activity to Saturday March 5. Taking no chances they have now shifted indoors to the much smaller New Amsterdam Town Hall, beginning at 18:00 hrs. According to the organizers the same gyms and bouts are still on the cards and boxing fans can expect the same amount of fistic action as outdoors.
Among the number of Gyms expected to be a part of the action includes Central New Amsterdam Boxing Gym, Rose Hall Bombers and Jammers the newly formed Lion Heart Boxing Gym and Host ‘Pocket Rocket’ from Rose Hall out of Berbice.
A number of boxers are also expected from gyms in Georgetown and other parts of the country including The Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Harpy Eagle, and Forgotten Youth Foundation along with Timehri Warriors among other entities matching punches with the Berbice posse. The competition this year is being organized by Rogers and former national multi weight Amateur and pro Boxing champion Jeff Roberts.
Roberts and Rogers had stated that several coaches were working along with the boxers at the various gyms; they include former Guyana national Light heavy weight Boxing Champion AL Thomas, the only Guyanese to have sparred with former world heavy weight boxing great Mohammed Ali.
