There is the adage which says “Try and try again, you will succeed at last”, this is apt in describing the phenomenal achievement of Colin ‘Mr. Clean’ Chesney who became the first Guyanese to break the 800lb squat barrier.
The date was Sunday February 20, 2011 and the venue was the Skeldon Secondary School, Corriverton, Berbice. This venue proved to be a blessed one for Chesney who had tried achieving the record before but was not able to do so.
“I’ve tried to squat 800lbs a very long time, one time I failed because of depth, another time my squat suit burst but now in Berbice, I’ve achieved it and I’m very pleased about it,” Chesney said.
He stated that the venue was very kind to him despite the long distance he had to endure to get there. Chesney drove all the way from the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden where he lives to Berbice.
Prior to achieving the new mark of 804.7lbs (365kgs) Chesney, the National Heavyweight Champion’s best was 744 lbs (337.5kgs) which was accomplished at last year’s Senior National Championships held at the Critchlow Labour College.
Commenting on his preparations, Chesney informed that he had just about two weeks to get in shape after receiving a call from Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) Peter Green asking him to one of three guest lifters, the others were ‘Big’ John Edwards and Fazim Abdool.
Hard work in those two weeks brought great rewards for the Linden strongman who represents the Total Fitness Gym of Grove East Bank Demerara.
With the feat now realized, the 37-year-old Chesney will now be focused on taking care of the opposition at the 5th Annual Caribbean Championships set for next month end in the Cayman Islands.
Chesney noted that he has been in the sport for about 15-years now and growing up as a youngster he always loved the strongman man game, “I always like these macho man thing, ride bicycle, play American football, basketball,” Chesney shared.
Discipline, commitment and hard work have been his watch words over the years and he stated that it will keep him going.
“I’ve always been a hard worker in the gym and as long as you are consistent you will get the results. “
Chesney posited that powerlifting, weightlifting and bodybuilding are very excellent sports to get involved in and is encouraging more persons to get involved.
