looks forward for betterment in 2011
The Central Police Station in New Amsterdam amidst all the negatives that have been permeating the air about the police excess and other atrocities, one again had a relatively successful year in their community outreach and sports programme.
This is even whilst their colleagues elsewhere struggle to keep their image and that of the police force afloat. The force has recently undertaken initiatives to enhance their image and make life better for those in its employ in addition to the police community relationships. However this has not been easy with the public being constantly fed a dose of police extremes and imprudence.
But with good intent and a few good men, much could be achieved and that the story with the Central Police Station Operational Outreach programme in particular and B division in General.
For the year a number of initiatives have been successfully undertaken which were a continuation from the previous year. The man behind the success story is station sergeant attached to the Central Police Station Jairam Ramlakhan.
Sergeant Ramlakhan is the point man and speaking to Kaieteur sports recently, the sergeant said that the idea is all part of the forces’ enhancement project where the force is being geared to take on a new image and all in the quest of doing things differently.
Among the initiatives undertaken includes the reformation of police youth clubs and scouts groups, the successful staging of the Police Gymkhana, Domino, Boxing, cricket and other competitions among, the cops, the army, Fire and Prison services, the New Amsterdam Constabulary, the University of Guyana, Neighborhood police and civilians.
A number of other sporting activities were organised including cycling, Athletics, Volleyball and football.
While, community walk-about, visits and adoption of depressed communities were also undertaken. The University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC) under the astute leadership of its director Professor Daziel Samad played an integral part in the success of the many projects and programmes undertaken by the police in Berbice with tutoring and other advisory assistance.
Computer classes were also held at the University for new Recruits, which is now an on going process. The New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI) also played its part with tutoring and other help.
A Gym area and play field was also commissioned during the year at the Central Police Station compound in New Amsterdam. The facility is being used by police, Soldiers and civilians.
A number of indoor and as well as outdoor games were played at the facility including volleyball, Basketball, small goal football, cricket and Boxing and the Central New Amsterdam Boxing Gym is located there.
The Police recreational hall on the middle flat of the Central Police Station was also renovated and was fitted with television, tables and chalk board. The facility is now used for indoor sports including Table Tennis, Domino and Whist among others and lectures.
A number of businesses in the county and other cooperate and community based organizations have been giving their support and their commitment towards the various projects.
Already for this year a number of activities were held including an inter service domino competition which ironically was won by the police.
Over on the Western side, Officer in charge of the West Berbice subdivision, Deputy Superintendent Steven Mansell, was recently awarded the best Cop in the Guyana Police force for 2010.
In fact West Berbice has one of the largest police Scout groups in the Country which was launched during 2010. A few other youth groups have also been launched in the division.
The B division Felix Austin Police College on the Corentyne under the command of Superintendent of Police Ian Amsterdam and Woman Inspector Yonnette Stephen has also had their fair share of success.
The trainees are now involved in a number of initiatives including computer training and participating in community games, sports and outreach activities.
The Central Police, West Berbice police and the police training school participated in the Berbice Open Table Tennis competition last week.
