Osafo Rodwell yesterday appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to the charge of abduction.
The accused, who was unrepresented, was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
Prosecutor Corporal Venetta Pindar said that on February 18, at Wellington Street, Georgetown, Rodwell abducted Tamika Samuels.
During yesterday’s hearing the police accused Rodwell of providing them with various names.
With that the prosecutor informed the court that four arrest warrants were issued for the suspect after he was sentenced for two offences for which he was earlier charged.
According to the police, Rodwell, who in 2009 told the court that his name was Osafo Stuart was sentenced to three years for robbing the said Tamika Samuels. He was also sentenced in 2008 to two years after robbing the said plaintiff.
Madame Hazel Octive-Hamilton who was the Magistrate presiding over the matter at the time handed down the sentence despite Rodwell failing to report for his trials.
Immediately the accused blurted out, “Yall ain’t hear what I saying. My name is Osafo Rodwell, not Osafo Stuart.
I just came back to Guyana. Is de police come by me mother and say they want some Osafo Stuart. I told dem dat I ain’t name dah”.
Magistrate Beharry then informed him that bail was being refused and she immediately transferred the matter to Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton who was instructed to identify the accused.
Over in the new court the Magistrate asked the accused if his name was Osafo Stuart. Unexpectedly the accused answered in the affirmative. This angered the magistrate. The accused then blurted out that his mane was Osafo Rodwell.
Magistrate Octave-Hamilton criticised the accused for misleading the court and remanded him until April 29.
The accused as he was escorted from the court, kept protesting that his name is Osafo Rodwell.
