Feb 23, 2011 Letters
Dear Editor,
AFC’s General Secretary, Sixtus Edwards writes “In Animal Farm terminology some pigs are more equal than others” in KN of 19th February 2011. I would like to ask Mr. Edwards after highlighting all the failures of the PPP, what has he or the AFC done since 2006 to change it?
It is not now that Mr. Edwards knows Dazzell Housing Scheme has no lights but neither he nor his party ever offered leadership to the residents and show them how to put pressure on the government to get lights.
He reminds us that “on September 26, 2006, this is what President Jagdeo said to the Ninth Parliament: ‘Mr. Speaker, in the next five years, my Government will work towards the political, economic and social transformation of our country in which all our people will have equal access to the resources and benefits from economic development and improved social conditions.’”
Mr. Editor, the AFC has done nothing, nada, during the last five-years to make sure President Jagdeo keeps his promise to the people. In fact I think the Jagdeo regime can say to the AFC that it supported what the governemnt is doing because the AFC voted with the PPP at least 80 percent of the time in parliament.
Mr. Edwards said, “This stratification of the people by the PNC and the PPP into racial camps makes it easy for them, to hide their real intent, hegemonic power over the people at the expense of their inherent and inalienable freedom.”
The AFC won six seats from the PNC strongholds from people who wanted to give the party a chance to prove itself. Go and ask those people if the AFC has done anything for them, expose what the government is doing to them, or stand with them on any issue. The answer is a resounding no.
For example, take the Linden nurses who struck for gratuity pay, the crisis in the Linden Town Council and the bauxite workers dispute with BCGI. In all cases the AFC has disappointed.
When you ask AFC members about all the promises they made and why they failed to live up to them or at least try to protest against what the government is doing, an excuse is the quickest thing that come to their mouths.
It is elections time, Mr. Edwards, and the party will attack the PPP and PNC and behave as the goodie-two-shoes but the truth is the AFC failed to deliver despite given so much support from us. CN Sharma and the WPA have done more for the people than the AFC who has more seats in parliament than the WPA ever had and which Sharma never got.
