– warder under close arrest
Prison officials assisted by their counterparts in the Joint Services have launched a manhunt for a murder accused who escaped from the Camp Street prison under mysterious circumstances on Monday.
Although prison authorities are suggesting that the inmate, Eddie Williams, 18, of 37 Back Street, Ruimzeight, West Coast Demerara, escaped by climbing the eastern fence surrounding the main penal institution during a downpour, Kaieteur News understands that the man who was arrested last month, calmly walked out through the main gate of the prison.
According to reports reaching this newspaper, Williams, a remand prisoner who works in the prison kitchen, disappeared sometime on Monday afternoon.
A source said that when prison authorities carried out a tally of inmates around 18:00 hours, Williams was not there.
Kaieteur News was also told that a prison warder who was posted near the area where Williams escaped has been placed under close arrest.
Police and army ranks have since questioned the fugitive’s close relatives at the Ruimzeight, West Coast Demerara where he resided.
Questions are being raised as to why a murder accused was allowed to work in the prison kitchen. However, despite repeated efforts, Kaieteur News was unable to contact Director of Prisons Dale Erskine for a comment.
Up to late yesterday, no wanted bulletin had been issued for the fugitive.
Police had only recently captured Williams, who is accused of stabbing 29-year-old Jermaine Jones to death at Ruimzeight on November 30, 2010. He was remanded after appearing before Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin at Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.
Williams is the cousin of the victim’s reputed wife.
After the bloody 2002 Mash Day jailbreak, several recommendations were made to improve security at the penitentiary.
