Mandessa Moses was tested to the hilt when she underwent training sessions yesterday afternoon at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG), in preparation for her catchweight bout against Veronica Blackman, in the twelfth edition of the monthly ProAm boxing affair scheduled for this Friday, February 25, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).
Keenly observed by top boxing coach, Lennox Daniels, Moses rested from sparring but spent the greater part of the afternoon honing her skills in the technical aspect of the sport. Daniels had the lanky fighter shadow boxing for several rounds as he taught her the intricacies of quartering the ring, infighting and punching on the move among other techniques.
These sessions were complimented with several rounds on the striking pads and the centre ball before Moses turned her attention to fifteen minutes of hectic skipping. Lathered in sweat Moses, who squares off with Blackman, diligently applied herself to the tasks. From all appearance she is set to cart off the honours. “I am training with just one intention in mind—winning at all cost,” intimated Moses just after wrapping up sessions.
Quizzed on her tactics and strategy for the bout the lanky fighter replied, “I will be punching off of the jab because I know that Blackman will be coming out to war.” Moses said that she expects Blackman to come in the heavier fighter since she (Moses) is not a full fledged light/heavyweight fighter. “Most of my opponents to date outweighed me but I have defeated them all and am confident I will defeat Blackman,” exhorted Moses.
She further intimated that she nurtures the ambition of winning a world title in the near future. “I cannot let Blackman stand in my way,” she said.
A resident of Friendship on the East Bank, Moses said that she engages in several miles of stiff roadwork along the East Bank corridor every morning. To date she has fought 6 times with a loss to Barbadian, Wendy Allen being the only blemish on her record. She has defeated Quinda Rogers, Sharon Ward, Alisa Marques, Trinidadian Liam Boodoo and Margaret ‘Chico’ Walcott. “Blackman will be victim number six,” she adamantly stated.
