Local chess players would be called to duty when the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) in collaboration with DDL, under its TOPCO Juices brand, stages a one-day Republic Anniversary Rapid Chess tournament this Saturday, 26th February at the KEI-SHAR’S Sports Club, Hadfield Street, Werk-en-Rust Georgetown.

All eyes will be on Loris Nathoo who is on a high after carting off the honours in the recently staged Trophy Stall Chess Tournament at the same venue.
Former national champion, Wendell Meusa will also be staking a claim for the top prize and it must be remembered that he lost out to Nathoo by a mere ½ point after the two players had entered the final round locked on 5 points apiece. It was here that Meusa blundered, losing to Alexander Duncan to surrender the title. This time around he will want to employ all the stops to cart off the honours.
Former junior champion, Taffin Khan will also nurture high ambitions of winning this tournament after his commendable performance at the recently staged national championships where he defeated former national champion Kriskal Persaud. This was indeed a momentous occasion for young Khan and after tasting the sweetness of victory, he would obviously go after a repeat. With these top guns all nurturing great ambitions of carting off the title, a competitive tournament looms.
Meanwhile, DDL Brand Executive, Alexis Crawford handed over the sponsorship cheque to Treasurer of the GCF, Shiv Nandalall last Monday morning and once again pledged her company’s support towards the sport. The executives of the GCF were assured that the beverage company would throw their weight behind at least five tournaments this year. “TOPCO is pleased to contribute to chess as it is not only a fun pastime activity but it also helps players to be self-motivated while increasing their imagination and creativity,” exhorted Ms Crawford.
Treasurer of the Chess Federation Shiv Nandalall expressed gratitude to Ms Crawford and thanked her for the support received from her company. Mr. Nandalall further noted the commitment and support rendered by DDL to chess. He also disclosed that while the tournament is open to all chess players, his executives wish to see more junior players participating.
The competition would be played for seven rounds using the Swiss System. Players will compete for over seven rounds with a time limit of 40 minutes per game. Registration starts at 10:00hrs on the morning of the tournament and the first pawn will be pushed one hour later. Trophies and cash prizes are at stake. Senior players that are not affiliated to the Federation are required to pay an entrance fee of $800.00 while their junior counterparts pay $600.00. Senior members affiliated to the Federation pay $300.00 for while the juniors pay $200.00.
Interested players are asked to contact Irshad Mohamed on 664-1650 or Shiv Nandalall on 225-8270 during office hours for further details.
