Guyana needs a very special leader

Dear Editor,
As Guyana approaches yet another election it is time to take stock of where we are as a nation. We are not a cohesive nation. We are divided along racial lines more than we ever were in the 1960’s.
The competition for political power has left us devastated in all aspects of life. The racial violence of the period 1998 to 2005 has left deep festering wounds in our people and the rulers have made no effort to heal our country. They have instead amassed great material wealth.
The pursuit of personal aggrandizement by our little dictators has completely destroyed all semblances of civility, morality, ethics, and religious values at the level of government.
The PPP’s reign is characterized by scandals of financial corruption, sexual predation, drunken brawling, pistol whipping, gold claim jumping, land grabbing, and buggery. This is not an example to our young citizens.
That is why so many of them resort to criminal behaviour in an effort to emulate their political leaders.
We cannot afford to continue on the course the PPP has plotted for us. We are already on the verge of lawlessness.
I write this letter to make the case that Guyana needs a very special leader in whom all Guyanese can repose their trust and confidence, and who can restore order, civility, morality, ethics, and religious values. Such a leader must one who has received religious instruction all his life, and who has lived by such religious values. It matters not what religion, or belief system.
We can recognize such a person by the ego he or she exudes. The more ego on display means less room for God.
The converse is true. Less ego means a larger presence of God. That is why Lord Krsna said we must tame the ego, and Lord Jesus said we must be like little children. And we do have a leader with all these qualities…maybe not as meek as a lamb but certainly a man who is very humble. He is none other than Brig David Arthur Granger.
I have personally known Brig Granger since 1981 when I enlisted in the GDF. I also knew him at church, and later in civil society. Although he was a Brigadier and Force Commander of the GDF, he was never egoistic. He always conducted himself with the quiet cultured dignity of the educated and spiritually developed person.
He was always sensitive to the welfare and needs of his subordinates. Brig Granger was soft spoken, a sure sign of refined culture, and he was always fair and firm in his command. He never displayed any weakness for material wealth. In fact he always showed disdain for symbols of opulence.
He instead had an insatiable appetite for knowledge and this led him
into the academic field where he excelled in History.
He has all the attributes to be a just President, and I ask the PNC delegates to vote on February 26, for Brig Granger to be the PNC’s Presidential Candidate.
I also ask all Guyanese, especially Indians, to support Brig Granger. He is the ideal candidate for President. He meets all criteria. In those days when religion ruled the world, the warrior princes at an early age were removed from the luxurious palaces and placed in the bare mud huts of the Brahmin sages who instructed them in military science, weapons, politics, history, ethics, and religion.
Those princes stayed at those schools for at least 10 years. The whole purpose of such an education was to produce just kings. Fortunately for Brig Granger, in today’s modern era, we do not subject our potential leaders to such penances, but I dare say Granger has all the qualities and we must all rally around him.
