Eleven passengers were injured after a hire car HB 1155 collided with a route 42 minibus BLL 8292 which resulted in the bus toppling three times before crashing into two parked vehicles PMM 9056 and BFF 9865 that were parked in front of Neal and Massy staff facilities at Ruimveldt yesterday.
The injured were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where they were treated for various injuries that included lacerations, bruises and abrasions about their bodies.
The driver of HB 1155 was taken to Ruimveldt Police Station while the bus driver was taken to the public hospital. Many persons at the scene of the accident had varying opinions on which driver was responsible for the accident.
Two of the injured passengers told this publication that the minibus had the right of way and was heading towards the East Bank when in the vicinity of the Ruimveldt Police Station a car came speeding out of First Street Alexander Village. The driver of the bus tried to swerve from the car. However, the car hit the minibus causing it to topple several times.
According to eyewitnesses, the minibus was speeding while overtaking another vehicle and the driver of the bus noticed that a car was exiting First Street Alexander Village and could not stop in time to allow the car to make the turn into the other street. As such both vehicles collided at the intersection.
“The driver of the car was in the middle of the road when the accident happened, and both of them were speeding,” one woman said.
Residents in the area told this publication that on many occasions their children are unable to cross the road since vehicles are proceeding recklessly on the road.
“We need a traffic light here or a policeman whole day, because only when policemen are here, children can cross and the traffic can go the right way.”
Another said, “there is too much traffic here we need a light to prevent accidents in the area…What will happen when they make the four-lane highways?”
