The consistent Robin Persaud blazed the East Coast Demerara Highway on a raining morning Sunday last to win the 88th Birth Anniversary Cycle Road Race held in memory of the Late President Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham, Guyana’s first Executive President.
Persaud, a member of the Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club has been in the top flight ever since the opening of the season but decided that it was time to turn the tables on Alonzo Greaves who has been the dominant rider so far and was also the defending champion.
Persaud stormed to victory ahead of Geron Williams, Greaves, Mark Lewis, Jamal Nichols and Junior Niles in that order. Lewis claimed half of the ten sprint prizes; Darren Allen won two while there was one each for Tony Simon, Alex Mendes and Marlon Williams.
The junior category also saw an upset with Kurt La Rose of Continental Cycle Club upstaging his club mate and leading junior campaigner Paul De Nobrega, Raymond Jeffrey copped the third place.
Niles was unstoppable in the veteran division taking the top spot followed by Raymond Newton and Talim Shaw. Hazina Barrett was the top female.
The event, in its Fourth Year is organised and funded by the Forbes Burnham Foundation. It started at Carifesta Avenue proceeded to Belfield (Burnham’s Former Residence) before returning to the starting line for the finish with a total of 32-starters.
Speaking at the presentation of prizes where over one hundred thousand dollars was distributed, Chairman of the Forbes Burnham Foundation, Mr. Vincent Alexander touching on the objective of the race, said that under Burnham’s Presidency, much was done to enhance sports across the board in Guyana.
President of the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) Hector Edwards, National Cycling Coach Hassan Mohamed were also on hand to witness Sunday’s race.
Forbes Burnham foundation Secretary Akesha Simpson distributed the prizes to the elated recipients.
