– Firm decision to be announced today
The government is considering postponing the annual Mashramani costume and float parade, because of the torrential rains which flooded the city and coastal communities yesterday. The rains are expected to continue over the next few days.
President Bharrat Jagdeo, who toured flooded areas, announced that he was talking with Opposition Leader Robert Corbin, about moving the parade to another day, possibly Sunday.
Mashramani is held to celebrate the country’s attainment of Republican status. The anniversary is observed as a national holiday every year and will still be celebrated as a national holiday tomorrow, but the carnival-like float parade is what could be affected by the rains.
Minister of Culture Dr Frank Anthony, who spearheads the Mashramani celebrations, told Kaieteur News that a “firm decision” will be made and announced today.
Corbin confirmed that he had discussions with the President on pushing back the costume and float parade. Corbin was not in favour of the parade being held on Sunday because most families usually set aside that day for worship.
However, he said he would have no difficulty with the costume and float parade being held on Monday.
But ultimately, Corbin said it is the government that has to make the decision.
Having toured the Mash route, Corbin said that even if the weather holds today, it is unlikely that the place would be dry enough to accommodate the thousands who usually line the streets to watch the float and costume parade.
