‘He threaten this before’ – reputed wife
An argument between 19-year old Shireen Alli, and her reputed husband, Steven Totaram, led to the fiery destruction of their home.
Yesterday, around 05:00hrs Radica Alli, who lives in the same yard with her daughter, awoke to her daughter’s blazing house.
Radica said that she heard a cracking sound between ‘sleep and wake’. She thought the sounds were coming from the goats in the yard. However, she soon felt the heat, jumped out her sleep, and realised that her daughter’s house was on fire.
According to her, “By the rain been falling heavy nobody really heard anything.” The fire was said to have been set by Shireen Alli’s reputed husband, Totaram. According to Alli the house was newly built. “Not even a year old”. Fortunately, no one was injured in the process. Alli and her two children, aged four and nine months, were in the front house with her mother.
Alli said that her sleeping out resulted from an earlier argument between her and Totaram. According to the abused teen, Totaram physically abused her earlier in the day. She revealed that her husband became furious because she lent a cell phone to her older son for him to play games. The woman said that her older son is not Totaram’s child; hence, the bad treatment. Totaram is said to be a drug addict.
Alli said that she did not get a chance to save anything from the fire. This newspaper understands that the man lurked around the compound while the house was aflame. Neighbours spotted the arsonist and ran behind him. However, he managed to escape; leaving his bag behind. In the bag, neighbours retrieved some of his clothing, a sheet, a hammock and baby formula which belonged to his nine-month-old infant.
Alli said that this is not the first time that her reputed husband pulled a stunt of this sort. She said that he once poured gasoline around the house but was deterred from setting it afire.
The distraught woman said that she was in relationship with Totaram for four years. According to her, he is a miner in the interior. She said that when he first came out of the bush he would give her money but sometimes he spends awhile in the city before his return to the interior.
Alli also revealed that it was only last Christmas that he “black and blue me eye” early in the morning. On some other occasion, the drug addict cut Alli with a knife on her right hand, the woman said. According to her she was growing tired of his abuse but tolerated him because of the fact that he is the father of her child
The woman said that on Sunday she made a report to Sophia police station twice. The second time he escaped but returned at the crack of dawn to burn the house.
Alli reported that the Guyana Fire Service responded promptly but was not able to save the house. However they stopped the fire from spreading.
She said that neighbours were extremely helpful during the process.
