Dr. Osmond Mack emerged as the best overall lifter following victory in the 74kg novice class when the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) held their annual Novice and Junior Championships at the Skeldon Secondary School, Corriverton, Berbice on Sunday.
Mack of Kingsrow Barbell Club won the Novices Men’s Open Championship with Upper Demerara Barbell Club’s Godwin Edwards 2nd and another Kingsrow lifter Owen Thomside 3rd.
In the Novices Sub Juniors competition which attracted four lifters, 16-year-old Gumendra Shewdass won ahead of his brother Suraj both of Total Fitness Gym (Berbice). Fourteen-year-old Kevin Brijlall had to settle for the 3rd place.
Out lifting his rivals in the Novices Junior Class was Premchand Singh (Buddies Gym); Total Fitness’ Fabian Ketwaroo copped the runner-up spot with Hardcore’s Chris Sankar 3rd. Six athletes contested this division.
In the head to head battle of the Junior Championships Anis Ade-Thomas of Total Fitness Gym overcame a spirited challenge from Kingsrow Barbell Club’s Kenneth Melville to win the title and cement his place as one of the best in his category.
Sunday’s championships, the first for the Federation this year also marked the first time they {GAPF} have held these competitions in the Ancient County. It was well supported by the Berbicians and despite a late start they stayed until the end, just after 20:00hrs.
