DDL kick-starts students’ assistant programme
Four students who performed well during the recent National Grade Six Examination are the first ever recipients of the DDL Foundation awards.
The winners were announced Friday at a small ceremony held at the Demerara Distillers Offices in Kingston.
According to DDL, first formers Chelsea Balkarran of Queen’s College, Fareeda Bacchus and Natasha Lonke of Bishops’ High School, and Anfernee Headecker of Saints Stanislaus College were selected after having met the criteria by excelling at the exams.
DDL’s Chairman, Dr. Yesu Persaud, the four students and officials of the DDL Foundation earlier this month.
Chairman of the DDL Foundation, Rudy Collins, in welcoming the recipients, congratulated them on their successes and noted that the event was a proud moment for the Foundation.
He pointed out that while this was a pilot project focusing on students mainly from East Bank Demerara, the Foundation would be open to applications from students all across the country from September 2011.
Chairman of Demerara Distillers Limited, Dr. Yesu Persaud, said that his company was committed to the development of people and the communities in which it operates.
He charged the students to give back to their communities, reminding them of the responsibility they had not only to their parents and the foundation but to themselves.
The foundation, which was launched in December, focuses on the advancement of education in secondary students by assisting with the main costs associated with attending school.
This includes books, uniforms, transportation and meals. All students who have excelled at the National Grade Six Examination and who have demonstrated their need for assistance as a result of their financial or social constraints can apply to the foundation.
The foundation, according to DDL, comprises mainly volunteers from staffers and includes a Mentorship Programme.
The foundation is being managed by a Board of Directors that includes Chandradat Chintamani, Loris Nathoo, Sharda Veeren-Chand and Evelyn Hamilton.
Alison Thorne has been appointed as the legal advisor to the Foundation while Sharon Sue-Hang will serve as Secretary.
